Magic of Children in the Arts 2013

It is time to prepare your artwork for the upcoming Magic of Children in the Arts Show. Children ages 4-13 in the Collingwood and Clearview areas are eligible to participate.

There are eight (8) free art workshops planned at the Collingwood Public Library starting January 26, Feb 2, 9 and 16. Call Christine Palka at 705-445-1571 ext 6241 to register. The themes this year are easy: Nature, Stories or Imagination. You can download the application form on this website.

I am looking forward to seeing all the amazing art pieces created by the children in our community. Last year we had 415 entries. It is truly magical! Every child receives a prize package of top quality art materials at the Awards Reception on March 24.

The show is open for viewing March 4- 31 during regular Collingwood Public Library hours.

New Painting~ Courtship

Courtship 60"x48" Acrylic Mixed Media on panel board

This painting is the latest addition to the Tree Series. I chose a simple version of one of the Tree drawings, and decided to keep the colours fairly neutral. This was a challenge as I traditionally layer on tons of rich colour. But I was happy with the result. It felt a bit like holding back a wild horse!

I also experimented for the first time with crackle molding paste by Golden. The look is amazing. It is important to use a solid substrate however, as the paste needs to contract against something rigid. Perfect for using on panel board. I have posted some detail photos below.

I use a resist technique that preserves the original line drawing on the panel board. It creates interesting textures and boundaries for the fluid paint.

The Monster Art Project

Culture Days 2012

Saturday Sept 29th 10am-4pm

Open to ALL AGES

Locations:  65 Simcoe St (the former EB Building)

Led by artist Katie MacKean.

The IDEA: Drop by and draw your scariest, silliest, funniest, beautifulist or ugliest MONSTER picture. We will photocopy your artwork, and you keep the original. Afterwards, at a later date, you will be partnered with a professional artist who will transform your drawing into a painting, sculpture or who knows what piece of ART.

In 2013 we will have an art show in Collingwood. Part of the art sales will go towards children's art programming through the Magic of Children in the Arts, a registered charity.

Come and try it out! Open to all ages- parents too!

Far Enough Farm

Far Enough Farm on Toronto Island is under threat of being closed down. I grew up visiting this farm often. It is a lovely, magical little spot. A place to connect to animals, see baby lambs in the spring along with baby chicks etc. I have taken my sketchbook and camera there many times. It is a great source for drawing, and capturing the personalities of the animals- and trust me, they have very distinct personalities!
I remember on one visit, Charlie the pig had escaped his pen and was running gleefully around the farm with the farmer gently, but firmly pleading with him to come back. Charlie spotted a big pool of mud and dove in, rolling around in delight. After getting sufficiently dirty, he trotted back to his pen, but not before he looked me straight in the eye, and said 'That was fun", and he almost giggled- I swear.
I hope we can find a way to keep the farm open. Seems like funding cuts always target the wrong things. The farm is an important experience to anyone visiting the Island. Any ideas?
